Putting CSS and web settings in the DataBase expensive?

I had an idea to put all my web design settings, css text and web content in the database..This way it would be easy for others to edit remotely. Do you guys think this would have an impact on performance if I do this?no .|||Its not an uncommon approach. Many web content management tools store their pages in databases.|||I wouldn't store your CSS in the database. You most definately will incur a performance hit if you do this. In order to pull this off, you would have to handle calls to http://yoursite.com/yourCss.css open a connection to the database and dynamically provide the valid CSS to each and every client that views your webpage. Storing page content dynamically suffers similar performance hits.

That said, dynamic CMS's such as DNN, Wordpress and Drupal take a similar strategy for the content of the pages. The construction of the pages themselves is handled through a set of business classes which have been optimized to construct pages from a given set of parameters as opposed to storing the entire page itself in a database.

If you are working on anything marginally complex, you will also have the issue of developers being able to view the entire project, or at least the relevant peices they are working on in real-time.

Moral: I wouldn't do this unless you have a REALLY good reason. Use Visual Source Safe or CVS or something else that is designed explicitly for this purpose.|||Well, you certainly sound like you know what you are talking about more than I sound like I know what I am talking about.

let's say you go to a site, and, amongst other things that you can customize, you are allowed to set various display properties like colours, font choice and size, display of various sidebars or not, and so on...

when you press the "save these settings" option, the backend will save these as your custom css parameters, but not just in the database, the backend will also (re)save them to a static .css file so that your browsing experience can take advantage of browser caching

i didn't really mean to bore you with details of web development in a database-driven environment, but the key point is, the database is used as a repository for all kinds of stuff

hence the name Content Management System|||when you press the "save these settings" option, the backend will save these as your custom css parameters, but not just in the database, the backend will also (re)save them to a static .css file so that your browsing experience can take advantage of browser caching

That's subtly different from serving up CSS from the database, which is the point I was attempting to make (albiet poorly).

CMS's also are not generally going to store the raw source for an entire page in the database.

We're arguing from the same side of the fence.

purchasing a SQL server 2000 system table poster

I have seen a few sites on the web that was selling the SQL server 2000
system table poster. There are simular posters for Oracle 8i, 9i and 10G
(which show the layout and columns of the system table spaces, such as
dba_user, user_tables, all_tables, user_constraints, dba_constraints, etc.).
I though that i had found a place to puchase the poster for SQL server 2000
(via SQL server magazine), but their e-store was down today and I could not
find any refernce to the poster on their web site.
Can anyone think of any places that I can purcahse such a poster. I have
heard that the SQL server 2000 poster is included when you purchase SQL
server 2000 (not sure what version it is included with, either standard or
enterprise), but I would like to get my hands on the poster as I need to see
some of the tables for the project that I am working on (for reference
purposes). I have not personally purchased SQL server 2000 myself as of yet,
hope to do so later this year).

he grabbed a copy for me from Terry Clancy (the SQL Server Product
Manager for MS Australia). But you can freely download the compiled

punctuation in fulltext searches

I am using Fulltext search in a web application I wrote for our
company that is bascially a knowledge base search engine - the app
searches and returns matches against our SQL 2000 database. The
problem I am having is this:
I cannot seem to figure out how to search for phrases, booleans, and
search terms with punctuation, etc.
For example:
searching for the filename history.dbf becomes historydbf
searching for "this exact phrase" becomes the 3 seperate keywords
this, exact, and phrase.
I currently have code in the web app that strips out punctuation and
anything other than letters/numbers, because when I was allowing them,
my searches were blowing up with errors.
Can anyone help me to understand how can I allow these kinds of
searches without blowing up the app or crashing the sql search?

I'm a little confused by your question. When I search on history.dbf I get
hits to history.dbf not historydbf.
If I search on "this exact phrase" using contains, I get hits to only "this
exact phrase"
If I search on boolean phrases, ie "this and that" the boolean operator is
ignored. It is effective when you do contains searches though.
Can you perhaps post your exact query here?

pulling a pdf out of a blob and displaying it in a browser window

I need to pull a PDF file out of a blob that I have uploaded it into. We
need it available on the web.
I can't think of how to utter a statement that will allow acrobat reader to
know that it needs to fire and open what is in the blob.
Ack.In your client code, create a memory stream, or byte arrray, and just write
the contents of that stream or byte array out to the web client using
Response.write...
To tell client browser to load Acrobat reader, just set the
Response.ContentType...
Don't know what you web server programming language is.. but in C#, it
would be:

Publishing Web Application

Hello to everybody.

I got a problem like this:

I developped a project using Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition on a XP pro x64 Machine using a developpemet data area on a SQL 2005 Express Edition.

Everything is ok, even the user and profile management. But when I try to publish my application on IIS (we're talking about a little Intranet), I get my problems. I think is important to say that the server is a Windows Server 2003 and data (database reproduced as a backup of the developpement one) are under an SQL 2005 Standard. The strange thing is that by publishing the "site" VS create a DB under SQL Std named with the path of local ASPNETDB.MDF.

I can reach everything, all data are ok, but when I pass the login page going to main menu on my web-application, I get this error:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

I think the problem is SQL STD and the fact that it's not "able" to manage MDF files.

I even tried to re-map the SQL DB (named simply as ASPNETDB on the SQL std) by adjusting the web.config file on connection type and user and password to reach the DB ASPNETDB but it does't work anyway.

Can anybody solve my problem?

You can always download the new version of SQl Management Studio for free. For publishing you need to register it with the DNS and then put either the IP or the servername in the connection string.

If you are using an IP address or a server name thatshould be resolved through DNS or over the Internet, you'll want to make sure that TCP/IP is enabled. Go to Start / Programs / Microsoft SQL Server, open the Client Network Utility, and on the General tab, make sure TCP/IP is at the top of the list on the right hand side.

If you are trying to connect to a named instance, you can use the following format:

Data Source = <server/ip>\<instancename>;

If you are running SQL Server or MSDE on the same machine as your ASP pages, you are probably tempted to use the hostname "localhost." This doesn't always work, due to different configuration issues, so try (local), 127.0.0.1, the actual host name, or simply a period (".").

However I have run many test with 100 or so cuncurrent users where SQL Enterprise and Asp.net are both sitting on a win2k3 Enterprise Machine with 4 Gig RAM, havent found any issue at all.

This is all new to me and trying to get sorted what road

to go down is the hardest bit.

Hi there,

I shall try to explain this,

With publishing scripts if you mean the code, then in visual studio there is a publish website option, from Build. If you mean something different please specify.

sql server 2005 is a server itself that runs on top of windows 2003 and hence if you havent given your sql server a different name it should be the name of your 2003, If you have DNS enabled and have got a domain, it should already be configured for you.

If you want somebody to host the db for you, then you can supply them the .mdf files so that they can re-create the table in their sql host for you, however in that case you will need to modify your connectionstring to theirs.

so for e.g. curently say you are using server =192.168.1.1 and they may have a server with ip 2.3.2.1 or say sqlserver(if mapped to dns)

then you will simply use

server =sqlserver or server =2.3.2.1 in your connection string.

Well that article is to make life easier for people and for people with stored procedures and other stuff. Generally .mdf is enough to create the database. But as pointed out in that article most providers do not know what they are doing and hence it creates a lot of problems to iron out these installation issues. Do not upload but supply them .mdf files and ask them to create the db for you, and they will give you the server name to modify in your connection string.

Publishing OLAP based Pivotables from Excel

I want to publish an OLAP based pivottables from Excel to a HTML file using Office web componets.

I have a server with SQL Analysis Services 2005 cubes and I can browse the cube from my desktop in Excel 2003 Pivottables.

When I publish the Pivottable with Pivottable interactivity I get an error in the browser:

The query could not be processed

- An error was encountered in the transport layer

- The peer prematurely closed the connection

In the Pivottable I have set 'Save password' in properties.

Any suggestions ?

I'm having the same error msg and problem to access SSAS 2005 cube over http at client machine.

This doesn't happen if you work in server (with Sql Server 2005 and web server installed).

That enables Pivottables and charts in Sharepoint. Very easy to use. Useful for designing dashboards.

I solved this for me.

The following is done by my app:

1) Connect to the server to access the existing AS databases and their cubes

2) make a connectionstring that is later on passed to the pivottable control (named opData here):

.opData.ConnectionString = sConnString
.opData.DataMember = .coCUBE_NAME
When building the sConnString you have to use a named user (in the format domain\username) with his password to be able to display the data of the remote machine

Publishing Crystal Reports in Web

Hi,

I'm using CR9. Planning to publish them in the web. Used ASP to publish them

But Is it necessary to instal CR 9 in the server.

My CreateObject("CrystalRuntime.Application.9") Failed because of Invalid ProgId Error.

Publishing a report to the web error

Does anyone know how to fix this error?

-I've tried allowing anonymous access to the site.

-I've added it to my trusted sites.

Error: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized.

I've got pass that error and now I am getting this error. I've added my windows account to the server but still keep getting this error. Any ideas?

Cannot create a connection to data source 'ODSTables'.

The report you are using does not have the correct credentials to execute the query against your underlying data source. Check what credentials you have specified through the report properties tab in report manager or in management studio.

My guess is that the report is set to run with windows integrated credentials. This would be the credentials passed to the report server from IIS. For example, if you set anoynomous credentials on the virtual directory this would be the user the report server is using to connect to the data source. A quick fix would be to store the credentials for the report in the reportserver.

|||I can view this just fine on my local report server. Why can't I view it through the website that I embedded it into? Doesn't make sense. I have my defalut.aspx page authenticated to windows, I have my windows account with permission on the reporting server and my local virtual directory to authenticate with windows integrated security. I also have my web browser to use current log in and password when visiting the site. Why is this so confusing to do?|||

Maybe try this. I believe that integrated security only allows 1 hop to pass credentials. You might want to try one of the following.

1) set the data sources property or the report to "Credentials stored securely in the report server" or "Credentials supplied by the user running the report"

2) set up a shared use a shared data source with "Credentials stored securely in the report server" or "Credentials supplied by the user running the report"

This sort of error can be due to several things. I would start by checking your IIS settings on your Reports and ReportServer virtual directories. More information on setting virtual directory security settings can be found here:

I have a rdl file and would like to publish it programmatically? Is there any API or Web Service available for this.

SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (SSRS) provides a full-featured set of APIs that you can use to integrate Reporting Services with custom business applications and extend its functionality.

The Report Server Web service provides access to the full functionality of the report server.

ReportingService2005 Class contains the methods and properties that can be used to call the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (SSRS) Web service.

You can use the method 'ReportingService2005.CreateReport' to create new report to the report server database.

Publish the cubes on the web portal

Hi all,
Is there the ability of publishing the cubes (which is built from an Analysis Services Project) on the web portal?
The purpose of this action is to let the BI users to do the analysis directly on the web portal.
The BI users can change the measure, slide and dice data, change the dimension (just like what you've done with the Analysis Services).

One of the options:

You can enable HTTP access to Analysis Services 2005 and let you users to access Analysis Services directly.

publish report

Hello,

I have create a web base project that will programmatically publish report into report server 2005.

But when i run the code, i need to create a shared data source and set the DataSourceReference.

Is there any ways else so that i no need to create a shared data source but still can publish the report in report server 2005 using custom data source?

You don't have to use shared datasource. You can just define a report specific datasource, in which case, all the datasource properties are embedded in the rdl. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159165.aspx
