Pushing Recordset into MSRS
Can we push an ADO recordset into MSRS (instead of MSRS pulling the data) to
create a separation between the report and the underlying data source? This
would help us to swap the data source without changing the reports.
Thanks,Hi,
In a short term you can create a custom dataset extension to get your ADO
recordset and "bind" it to the report. Accidentally, I have developed one
(http://www.gotdotnet.com/Community/UserSamples/Details.aspx?SampleGuid=B846
8707-56EF-4864-AC51-D83FC3273FE5 ). It allows you get an ADO.NET dataset
from somewhere (e.g. you BLL), pass it to the report as a report parameter
and expose it as a RS dataset. It also suports reporting off persisted as
XML files datasets.
In a long run, the next version of RS will include WinForm and ASP.NET
controls which will work in both connected and disconnected mode. The later
will support binding to ADO.NET datasets.

Hope this helps.

Is it even possible?Thanks,
Xana.
If there are mulitple records returned in your result set, then simply bind your returned DataSet to a GridView. I'm assuming you just want to display you data correct?
|||No, I just need to pass the two strings, and all of thier values, to the main page. I am trying to construct a JavaScript array based on the two strings but I need to pass all of the values before I can do that. I already know how to use ASP values and variables in JavaScript but I don't know how to pull the value into the main page for use.
|||How about loading the results into two different HiddenField controls whcih you can then use later from your JavaScript routines.
|||How would I seperate them out into two hiddenfields.
The reason I ask is that with what I am trying to do each child_system has a parent_system that it belongs too. I would lIke to create an associative array out of the two strings. Plus in total the for each loop that they are in returns 90 + results.
Even if I were to create the array in the code behind ( which I don't know how to do (in C#) ) I would still need to pull the array into the main page.
|||You can't. I misunderstood what you were wanting to do. I'd have to think about a solution.
|||Is there any way at all to pull the values into the main page?
|||Can you at all utilize the ClientScriptManager.RegisterArrayDeclartion method?
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.clientscriptmanager.registerarraydeclaration.aspx
|||How exactly would that script help me? And how would I use it exactly. I am looking at it but not really understanding it.
|||To be honest, I'm not exactly sure. It's just a way to create a JavaScript array from code. The only problem is that the method excepts a string for its ArrayValue field instead of an array of some sort, so creating the parameter itself would be a pain. If I can think of any other ideas, I'll let you know.
|||If I print out the variables into hidden fields with the names being the parent system and the values being the child system would it be possible to, by using a javascript function, call all of the values of the hidden fields?
An example would be there is a drop down menu with the parent systems. Say the user chose TEST_ESENG_SOFTWARE from the menu. TEST_ESENG_SOFTWARE had three child systems, TEST_ONE, TEST_TWO, TEST_THREE ( not using real names ).
With the onchange event for the first drop down menu I could call the function that gets the values from the hidden form fields that have the name TEST_ESENG_SOFTWARE, and then use them to populate a second drop down menu.
Is the above senerio at all possible?? If it is how would I do it?
|||That would be tough to do when the number of items in your data would vary. I'm not a JavaScript person by any means so I don't know how you'd extract values from a series of controls. Is your whole purpose for wanting this in JavaScript for performance? If so, might I suggest using an AJAX cascading drop-down list.
|||The reason for doing this in JavaScript is to avoid using postbacks because clearquest can get quite slow with return large sets of results. I know a method exists that gets the elements it is: getElementsByName() but I do not know exactly how to use it to return the actual values.
Do you know anyone who could help us on this forum? If so please give me a name as I can send them a message. If not, oh well I can try to find something online that can help me more. Your suggestions have been extremely helpful.
|||I wish I knew someone who could help you more, but I don't. It really sounds like you might benefit from using AJAX. Regardless, good luck.
pulling unique records from this query
I've got a table of Projects which I'm using with an asp:Repeater to display
a list of the projects. Here's the sql...
SELECT ProjectID, ProjectName, ProjectClient, DartsContact, LeadArtist,
Projects.AreaOfWork, AreaOfDoncaster, StartDate, EndDate, Running,
WorkAreas.AreaofWork AS AOWName, WorkAreas.RelatesTo AS AOWRelates FROM
Projects, WorkAreas
WHERE (NOT Running=0) AND (Projects.AreaOfWork LIKE '%' + WorkAreas.AOWCode
+ '%') AND (Deleted = 0) ORDER BY ProjectName ASC
As you can hopefully see, I'm using two tables to pull the data together.
It worked fine, until we made a change to the way the data is stored. The
Projects.AreaOfWork field now contains multiple AOWCodes seperated by a
delimiter. So now, whenever I run this query, I get more than 1 line for eac
h
project where there are multiple values in AreaOfWork. So, if I have a
project...
ProjectID, ProjectName, AreaOfWork
1, Test Proj 1, EDU
2, Test Proj 2, EDU|COM
I get 2 lines for Test Project 2, each with a unique AreaOfWork (one with
EDU, one with COM).
2 things... I need to stop it returning multiple records for the same
project when theres more than one AreaOfWork, but I also need to return the
entire AreaOfWork string, because I still need access to those.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Danwhy have you chosen to store your data like that (delimited) - it
breaks with normalisation, and is the main reason your having problems.
surely it would be easier if you had a separate table like
tblProjWorkAreas(ProjectID, AreaOfWork). Is there are reason for not
doing this?|||I see your point mate. Time constraints are the main reason for this.. it's
an addition to a project that's been running for a couple of years (the
having multiples instead of one).
Is there a way to get the query to work!?

EDU|COM, what output would you want - the area of work columns x2?
could you post a fuller example in terms of data from both tables, and
what you'd like your query to result in.|||Hi Dan,
Thanks for using MSDN Managed Newsgroup Support.
As Will mentioned, it is not a good idea to store your data like that.
So I want to know why you use the WorkAreas.AreaofWork and
WorkAreas.Relates in the query. If you want to unique the only Project in
this query, I think you may need to exclude the WorkAreas Table.
Also, you may provide me the result of the query now if you have 2
AreaOfWork in the Project Table.
I need to know the exactly different of these 2 records.

t
method, so no need to concern yourselves anymore :) I do appreciate that
using a third table would be a much better solution, and may consider that
for future redevlopment.
In answer to your question Wei, the reason for showing the AOW fields is
simply to show which Areas of Work a Project belongs to. WorkAreas.Relates i
s
a field that allows us to have inherited Areas of Work in the table, like so
.
aowcode aowname relates_to
1 Education null
2 Adult Ed 1
3 Preschool 1
etc.
Again, thank you both for your help today!

Pulling trans logs from one server to anthother
documentation.
I need to connect to a mapped drive and move trans log backups from on
server to another server so they can be applied.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
SusanI recommend using VBScript and the Windoes Scripting Host.
here is some documentation:
[url]http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/guide/sas_wsh_qlcc.mspx?mfr=true[/ur

It will allow you to create more robust scripts with error handling and
logging capabilities. Here are some examples:
[url]http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/ittasks/maintain/script1.mspx?mfr=true[/u
rl]
Search for the Scripting.FileSystemObject to get code samples.
I used it in the past with very good results. In fact, I have production
systems that depend on scripts I wrote and they still perform as intended.

However, my knowledge of VB scripting is very limited.
I'm trying to map a drive and just copy the files over using bat.
I'm sure the way you suggested is the best, but I'm under a time crunch and
don't have time for a learning curve.

source Specifies the file(s) to copy.
destination Specifies the location and/or name of new files.
/A Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
doesn't change the attribute.
/M Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
turns off the archive attribute.
/D:m-d-y Copies files changed on or after the specified date.
If no date is given, copies only those files whose
source time is newer than the destination time.
/EXCLUDE:file1[+file2][+file3]...
Specifies a list of files containing strings. Each string
should be in a separate line in the files. When any of the
strings match any part of the absolute path of the file to be
copied, that file will be excluded from being copied. For
example, specifying a string like \obj\ or .obj will exclude
all files underneath the directory obj or all files with the
.obj extension respectively.
/P Prompts you before creating each destination file.
/S Copies directories and subdirectories except empty ones.
/E Copies directories and subdirectories, including empty ones.
Same as /S /E. May be used to modify /T.
/V Verifies each new file.
/W Prompts you to press a key before copying.
/C Continues copying even if errors occur.
/I If destination does not exist and copying more than one file,
assumes that destination must be a directory.
/Q Does not display file names while copying.
/F Displays full source and destination file names while copying.
/L Displays files that would be copied.
/G Allows the copying of encrypted files to destination that does
not support encryption.
/H Copies hidden and system files also.
/R Overwrites read-only files.
/T Creates directory structure, but does not copy files. Does not
include empty directories or subdirectories. /T /E includes
empty directories and subdirectories.
/U Copies only files that already exist in destination.
/K Copies attributes. Normal Xcopy will reset read-only
attributes.
/N Copies using the generated short names.
/O Copies file ownership and ACL information.
/X Copies file audit settings (implies /O).
/Y Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
existing destination file.
/-Y Causes prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
existing destination file.
/Z Copies networked files in restartable mode.
The switch /Y may be preset in the COPYCMD environment variable.
This may be overridden with /-Y on the command line.
Example:
C:>xcopy E:\SQLData\*.trn \\remoteserver\C$\SQLBackups

How do I get the code for each SP and store it in the local copy of the db?
Can I just replicate the db and move the replica to a local area?

pulling single lines from a DB
Any ideas
Regards,
JoeHi Joe,
Are you want to retrieve any 1 question from DB randomly?
FYI:http://www.datawebcontrols.com/faqs/Data/ReturningDataInRandomOrder.shtml
Regards,
Pulling RS Report into online application
be able to pull in a report generated in RS. Currently, I can call the
report directly from the application using an HTTP "get", pass in the url
string with "rs:Format=PDF", save the resulting PDF file on my server, then
render that PDF file in my cold fusion application.
What I would LIKE to do is render the report in HTML format in my
application. The problem is, the report has a couple of graphs in it, and
the resulting HTML that is generated does not know where to find the graph
images.
Is there anyway to capture the resulting HTML that is generated from the
Report Server in such a way that it can be run in another online web
application (running on the same server as the RS), and yet be able to
correctly fetch the generated graphical images?
I hope this makes sense.
TIA,
BrianYour cold fusion app should be the same as viewing the report directly in
the browser itself unless I'm mistaken. Where does it think the graphic
images are? RS puts the img src to be the GUID of the image from the Report
Server. I'm just wondering where your web page thinks the image exists.

Using the <CFHTTP> "get", i'm able to capture the HTML generated for the
report by the RS. Embedded in the HTML is the following <img> tag which is
trying to load the graph:
<IMG
SRC="pathToReportServer?/pathToReport&Year=2004&rs:Format=HTML3.2&rs:ImageID
=C_4_S&rs:ChartImg="/>
When my application calls the HTML page, it is unable to load this image.
This is kind of a strange situation because i'm trying to load the graphical
image that the RS generated when i initially called the report a few seconds
ago using CFHTTP. The problem is, that report was called with certain
parameters causing that particular instance of the report to be generated
with that particular instance of the graph.
What I'm trying to do here might not be possible.

it may be a level of indirection that CF applies to the get. One other
option that you could possibly do is create an IFRAME in your CF app that
links directly to your report via the URL.

I'm using the web service to spit out the HTML which I stream out to the user.
The IMG_SRC has someting in it similar to what you report, which doesn't result in an image coming out.

talking directly to the Report Server, the server doesn't know when the
session is no longer valid.

Pulling row values from a dataset using embedded code?
columns once the report has been rendered to create a comma separated list of
those values to pass as a paramater to another report. I figure i will have
to do this in the code part of RS. Can anyone help me with the proper
functions and syntax to walk through the rows returned by my report and pull
the values from the column I need.
I imagine it would look like this
function GetItemList()
Dim rtnstr As String
Dim x As Interger
Set rtnstr = ""
for x = 0 to (RowNumber("DatasetName")-1)
rtnstr = rtnstr & DatasetName(x).ColumnName.Value & ","
next
return rtnstr
end function
What I am stuck on is how to pull the values from the column in the
particular dataset I need and also how to determine the Scope of the dataset
to know how long th loop needs to run for.
ThanksOut of the box, you can only base a report on the following data sources: SQL
Server, Oracle, OLE DB and ODBC. The data output by a report does not fall
into one of these categories; in other words, there is no data processing
extension that allows you to read data from one report into another report.
You should re-design your solution. What about writing a stored procedure
that writes the data to a second table, appending commas as required to
create the csv format you want? You could then report off this second table?

My Report is already driven by a stored procedure, however, there are local
filters the user can apply to the report through the report viewer as well.
So As far as the stored proc generates the dataset, I'm good to handle those
results and create the list i need. The problem is when the user applies a
filter that is specific to that report and thus not sent back to the stored
proc. I was hoping there was a way I could avoid rewriting my stored proc to
include all my report parameters, or furthermore, writing another stored proc
to generate my list.
Thanks for your help.

Pulling reports from Reporting server
Pulling Random Distinct Percentage
Thanks in advance for any help!
tblRecords
record_id (int) [key]
location_id (int)
owned_by_id (int) [default = 0]
is_complete (int) [default = 0]
date_entered (datetime) [default = getDate()]
date_completed (datetime)
I'm trying to populate a Datagrid with ((Total - total completed -
total owned) * 7%) of random non-complete records and all owned records
within a given date range for each site sorted by date_entered.
I figure I'll need to create a temp table holding all the totals
(total, total completed & total owned) for each site (using distinct
and count). And then for each row (or site) loop through the math
shown above and then select random top X where is_complete = 0 AND
owned_by_id = 0 AND date_entered BETWEEN startDate AND stopDate.
Then SELECT WHERE is_complete = 0 AND owned_by_id <> 0 AND date_enteed
BETWEEN startDate AND stopDate. Then somehow merge the result... then
merge again with the looping table. Once complete sort table by
date_entered and return. I'm not sure if that is the best/easiest way
to do this... so I'm wondering if someone else knows a better way, and
can provide an example, as my SQL skills are not up to par for this.
Thanks again!
~GregHi
Check out http://www.aspfaq.com/etiquette.asp?id=5006 on how to post DDL and
sample data. Also posting the required resultset from your data would be
helpful.
If your is_completed column can only have values of 0 or 1 then you could do
something like:
SELECT location_id, owned_by_id, SUM(is_complete) as Completed,
SUM(1-is_complete)AS incomplete, COUNT(*) AS total
FROM tblRecords
GROUP BY location_id, owned_by_id
to get the number completed. You will need to add the date constriction in a
WHERE CLAUSE. If you can have other values you can do something like:
SELECT location_id, owned_by_id, SUM(CASE WHEN is_complete = 1 THEN 1 ELSE 0
END) as Completed, SUM(CASE WHEN is_complete = 0 THEN 1 ELSE 0 END)AS
incomplete, COUNT(*) AS total
FROM tblRecords
GROUP BY location_id, owned_by_id
It is not clear if your owned_by_id is actually an is_owned binary value!.
You could use this query in a view or derived table instead of using a
temporary table.

pulling progress data
scheduling the jobs to run monthly. I'd like to pull data between
specific dates, but for some reason, I can't figure out how to filter
the data on the progress side.
I want to run a query that will pull all data from
prior-month/8/current-year
and
current-month/15/current-year
I'll also have to account for when it's january, make it december of
the year before.
Any ideas?
thanks,
M@.Well, I figured out part of it...
WHERE ("create-date" >
to_char(CONCAT(CONCAT(to_char("MONTH"(add_months("sysdate"(), - 1))),
'/8/'), LTRIM(to_char("YEAR"("sysdate"())),
' '))))
This whole nasty mess would give you 5/8/2006 if you ran it in June of
2006.
Now I have to figure out the other part of this mess is what the hell
happens when it's January :)
