putting names of objects to control-flow loop creating objects

please help newbie

I need to create a lot of objects the same type (let's say: schemas)
I wish to use paramerized block in loop to do so.
- how to put names of my objects to such control-flow?

Firstly the obvious question: Why? Where are the names from these
objects coming from? If you can write a query to extract the names then
you could just use Query Analyzer or Management Studio to paste those
names into an editable script and then run the script directly. That
way there is no need for a loop.

If you must do it programmatically then you'll have to do something
with dynamic SQL. See:

http://sommarskog.se/dynamic_sql.html
Personally I'd say that if you have so many schemas that you need a
loop to create them then you definitely have too many schemas... or you
are using them in a highly unconventional manner.

Whenever possible please post enough code to reproduce your problem.
Including CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements usually helps.
State what version of SQL Server you are using and specify the content
of any error messages.

first idea is to build scripts in engineer maneer (reusing code blocks - not
to copy them - so managing any changes is better)

second reason - I got my analysis data model in RaRose, which doesn't really
support automatization of creating data model. I use creating
quasi-sqlserver scripts, so I have object names and so. It's not really
large amount of objects (a few schemas, about 100 tables) - but it does
change any time.
Sorry if it sounds a bit werid :-) I'm a newbie

third idea was to create that way descriptions to my obiects (tables,
attributes) in a loop (having descriptions in xls file, for example)

All hints will be appeciated.

But text file is not SQL, but you have to transform it to SQL?

Doing this from SQL is not really fun. If you are on SQL 2005, you
could do this through the CLR, but you would still go through hoops.
Do this from a client application: Perl, VBscript or whatever your
favourite may be.

Without having seen your file, it's difficult to tell, but it does not sound
as if trying to read it from SQL is a very good idea. You probably much
better off doing this in a client language.

Putting Date into SQL Server

I'm trying to put a date into a SQL Server table. The database field type is "smalldatetime". The variable dDate is type "date" and contains: 2/2/2006 (although I think Cdate actually converts it to: #2/2/2006#). When I run the following code the date in the database is always ends up being: 1/1/1900.

Dim cmd As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("INSERT INTO MyTable(MyDate) " & _
"VALUES (" & dDate & ")", SqlConn)
daAppts.InsertCommand = cmd
daAppts.InsertCommand.Connection = SqlConn
daAppts.InsertCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()

Any other field types work fine, it's just dates that aren't working ?? Can someone please provide a code snippet showing me what I'm doing wrong??

Dates have to be single quoted:

Dim cmd As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("INSERT INTO MyTable(MyDate) " & _
"VALUES ('" & dDate & "')", SqlConn)

For clarity, here is the problem part enlarged (with the added single quotes):

('" & dDate & "')

|||That worked. Thank you.|||

Dim cmd As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("INSERT INTO MyTable(MyDate) " & _
"VALUES (@.dDate)", SqlConn)
cmd.parameters.add("@.dDate",sqldbtype.datetime).value=dDate
daAppts.InsertCommand = cmd
daAppts.InsertCommand.Connection = SqlConn
daAppts.InsertCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()

If you must continue to use string concatenation, atleast pass sql server dDate.ToString("s") as the string format. That will prevent any ambiguity of the format you are giving it. Otherwise you might be suprised when your program dies when you start playing with cultures, and SQL Server misinterprets that date.

push subscriber in merge replication

I am using merge replication with a push subscription type. I am wondering if the updates of the tables on the subscriber side are push to the publisher from the subscriber or pulled from the subscriber by the publisher when the syncronisation takes place. this makes a big diferrence for me and i can't find the answer to this question anywhere...

if anyone could answer it would be really appreciated

ThanksData Synchronization is performed by the Merge agent, wherever it runs from. In your case it's the Publisher.|||The Merge agent runs on the publisher but my question is : does the merge agent pull information from the subcriber or the subscriber push the information to the merge agent ??|||Well, it's a PULL if you look at it this way. The Agent runs on the Publisher, connects to Subscriber (see the agent's job definition in Scheduled Tasks), etc.sql

Punctuation ?

Hi
I have this simple and working well SQL-row:

MyCommand = New SqlDataAdapter("SELECT * From Tbl_Table where Type = '" & TestType.tostring & "' ", MyConnection)

----
Then I have this one which I am very proud of because I can retrieve any word or part of word from the Item-field:

Test_Text=(Session("session-Text").tostring)

Dim val1, val2, val3 as string
val1 = Test_Text
val2 = "%"
val3= val1 + val2

MyCommand = New SqlDataAdapter("SELECT * From Tbl_Table where Item Like '%" & val1 & " %' OR Item Like '%" & val3 & " %' ", MyConnection)

----
The problem is:
When I try to merge these two in one big "AND" row as shown below, It only cares of picking up the Test_Text string and ignores totaly the TestType one!
I guess it is a matter of punctuation, can any one help me? Thanks.

MyCommand = New SqlDataAdapter("SELECT * From Tbl_Table where Type = '" & TestType.tostring & "' AND Item Like '%" & val1 & " %' OR Item Like '%" & val3 & " %'", MyConnection)I fixed it like this:

MyCommand = New SqlDataAdapter("SELECT * From tbl_Table where Item Like '" & val1 & " %' OR Item Like '%" & val3 & "' AND Type = '" & TestType.tostring & "' ", MyConnection)

Thanks|||when i'm debugging a concatenated sql string like that, i usually dim a var and set the var to the string. then i can see the result of the concatenation before passing it to the command object. it helps me to pick out the syntax errs quicker...

i.e.

dim mySQL as string = "SELECT * From tbl_Table where Item Like '" & val1 & " %' OR Item Like '%" & val3 & "' AND Type = '" & TestType.tostring & "' "

MyCommand = New SqlDataAdapter(mySQL, MyConnection)|||That´s a good Idea, thanks!

pulling ntext values sql server 2005

hi,
i have a column of type ntext in the db, we're using that to allow
users to store essays they can enter. problem is when i'm running a
select on the ntext column, data seems to be getting cut off, isn't
ntext suppose to hold a lot of data, we wanted to allow them in a min
of 1500 chars, while everytime i do a
select len(max (convert(nvarchar(2000), essaytext)))

just to see the max we one had it's always 200.

Thanks.

What tool are you using for this? If it's QA, you can adjust what it returns
via a setting.

Yeah.. if you're only inserting 200.. ;-)

(note that text fields sometimes are better handled with readtext/writetext.

But if you're moving to SQL 2005 any time I'd highly recommend varchar(max)

Pull data from rows to make columns

I have a table with three columns:
AcctNbr, Type, CodeValue
Listed below is an example of the database.
AcctNbrTypeCodeValue
1MAILCODE99
2MAILCODE99
3MAILCODE99
4MAILCODE90
4MAILCODE99
4SEG1 O
5MAILCODE99
6MAILCODE99
7MAILCODE99
8MAILCODE99
9MAILCODE99
10MAILCODE90
11MAILCODE99
12MAILCODE99
13MAILCODE99
14MAILCODE99
15LIST DS1
15MAILCODE99
There are multiple Type's for some AcctNbr's and what I want to do is
run a query on the database so that if the AcctNbr has multiple Type's
and CodesValue's it takes them and creates new columns like so:
AcctNbr MailCode_90 MailCode_99 SEG1
4 90 99 O
So on and so forth. There are multiple Type's and multiple codes that
I need to do this with for each account number. If someone could give
me a base code to try I could start somewhere. I am an SQL novice.
Thanks.

| I'm having trouble using the example script file "PublishReports.rss".
|
| At the command prompt I type in:
| rs -i PublishReports.rss -s https://myserver/reportserver
|
| and I get an error:
| "The operation you are attempting requires a secure connection. (HTTPS)."

||||Hi Brad,
Sorry, typo in my first message.
I do have SSL installed on my IIS machine and when I try to publish to
https:// it says it can't find the server.
If I publish to http:// is says "The operation you are attempting requires a
secure connection (HTTPS)"
